For those looking for off post housing options, Olympia, Lacey and Dupont are located South of the JBLM area. These communities have a good variety of homes for rent and sale. These communities are seeing quite a bit of economic growth, both commercial and residential. They also feature a relatively quick commute to the Dupont gate, Mounts Road gate and Fort Lewis Main gate.  

Communities such as Roy, Yelm and Graham on the North and East side of JBLM have a more rural setting and on average, larger yard sizes. Yelm and Roy are located just outside the Fort Lewis East Gate off of Hwy 507. There are fewer rental homes in these areas, but they can be found.

Tacoma, Puyallup and Lakewood are the largest and most densely populated areas around JBLM. Here you can find a wide range of apartments, homes and condos for rent and sale.

The new addition of the cross base highway, connecting the Fort Lewis and McChord sides, has alleviated some of the traffic congestion.
